Junior Schumann Competition

With the »Junior Schumann Competition«, the City of Zwickau, the Robert Schumann Conservatory and the Robert Schumann Society wish to support up-and-coming pianists whilst offering them a stage on which to demonstrate their abilities. This artistic review, which takes place every two years, is thus aimed at children and youths up to the age of 19 who have not taken up musical studies and are permanent residents in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The focus is on the piano works of Robert Schumann, insofar as they may be mastered by these young pianists. At the request of the contestants, and in accordance with their inclinations, the competition has been opened up to include works by Robert Schumann plus those of his contemporary composers. In accordance with one of the Musical Rules of Home and in Life, »Hold the old in high esteem, yet also warmly embrace the new. Hold no prejudice against names unknown to you« (»Ehre das Alte hoch, bringe aber auch dem Neuen ein warmes Herz entgegen. Gegen dir unbekannte Namen hege kein Vorurteil«), a composition from the 20th century is required as an entrance piece from every participant.

The competition is held in, and also runs chronologically through, three age levels. Those 10 and under begin, followed by the 11-14-year-olds, and the 15-19-year-olds bring the competition to a close. Three prizes are presented to each age group. The contestant with the highest score in points receives a Special Prize from the Robert Schumann Society of Zwickau e. V. In keeping with the sentiment of the event. The awards presentations are held in Schumann's birthplace on the Hauptmarkt (market square) in Zwickau.
